We will be building the simplest version of a crystal radio. It will have a simple variable capacitor in the form of two metal plates. These kinds or radios were very popular for American troops during WWII and could be built out of parts laying around, so you could get radio in your trench with no batteries. They used a razor blade heated to act like a diode instead of a diode that we use now, but everything else is just about the same.

We can build much more complex designs where you can tune the coil to get more radio stations, or you can add more capacitors and resistors to reduce ground noise. A longer antenna will generally help increase the signal strength.
