The transit of Mercury is a rare event. It happens when the planet Mercury lines up in its orbit exactly between the Earth and the Sun. You will need to have a solar filter or a special solar telescope to look at this event. (It is dangerous to look at the sun without a proper solar filter.) However, we will have out Hydrogen Alpha telescope, specially designed to look at the sun, set up in Sycamore Park in IRVINE from 8AM until 10AM, when the transit ends.
Come out and bring the family to witness this rare occurrence. The next time you will be able to see this event from LA is in 2049.
